Slow directory

Rutland, UK
For years I’ve been compiling a list of my favourite ethical UK clothing labels, hoping to one day organise some events or collaborate to bring us together as a community to celebrate the Slow fashion movement and shine a more powerful spot light on the changes needed to make this industry more sustainable.

So I decided a great starting point would be to set up an online Slow directory with a carefully curated list of concious designers, makers and artisan crafters for you to discover and get behind. All who are working hard to give you a more mindful alternative to fast fashion.

I think most of us now are of the mind set that we want to buy fewer but better items in our life, investing our money in companies with a conscience who are trying to make our world a better place. I understand though it's not always easy to find the right brands with products that suit our taste levels, especially when our list of demands is increasing by the day in our quest to shop more mindfully. We want quality materials that have been responsibly sourced with no or little damaging effects to the environment, durability in construction so we can wash and wear the item knowing it will endure and possibly get even better with age, we even want the item to look unique and refined so that it fits in with our tasteful capsule wardrobe knowing it will get maximum wear.. and of course the knowledge that the item has been made under fair humane conditions by people who love and respect their craft.
Well, I think I've got you covered with this Slow directory line up and I'd very much like to hear about your ethical favourites if not listed so I can possibly extend the list or even open it up to an international audience in future.

Assembly Market 17th-18th November - London

So excited to be taking part in the first Assembly Market this November in Stoke Newington London, joining a huge line up of amazing designers, makers and artists for the weekend. This event has been expertly curated by Jannine Newman the talent behind clothing label Under the cloth. She has poured her heart and soul into making this event a special one so I hope you can make it over and support some great home grown businesses.

I can't wait to share with you the Shibui wear collection to get your thoughts and feedback on the range, I will have a couple of rails with ready made wears hanging for you to try on, buy and take home.

Here is a small teaser of The Assembly Market line up:

Even if you can't attend it would be wonderful if you click through to the Independents above and show them some festive support. I've already made a "Christmas Wish list"of beautiful items I hope to purchase over the weekend for friends and family. Would love to hear what you have your eye on...

Shubui objects appear to be simple overall but they include subtle details, such as textures, that balance simplicity and complexity. This balance of simplicity and complexity ensures that one does not tire of a Shibui object but constantly finds new meaning and enriched beauty that cause it's aesthetic value to grow over years.

The Japanese concept of Shibui fit so perfectly with my intentions for this collection, I wanted to share and celebrate with you the ideals that encompass this beautiful philosophy.

Simplewear in Rutland

On a windy afternoon we took an arm full of Simple wears and headed out to Rutland Water, hoping to capture the garments in the natural environment that inspired the collection.

A warm hug from Rutland

Rutland, UK

Having the support of your local magazines has to be the most positive and encouraging way to know your neighbourhood has got your back... So it was a huge honour to have a two page article written up by Sally Stillingfleet and published in both Stamford Living and Rutland Living magazine. Both magazines I look to each month for all the local happenings.

We met up a few months back in the Lean Pantry in Oakham and had a really good chat over a hot coco and a slice of sugar free cake. Such a warm and welcoming lady that Sally is, I ended up pouring my entire life story without a moments hesitation.. She politely scribbled notes and kindly agreed on my views of how fashion had become all too fast and disposable. It was only later after I got home the vulnerability hangover set in and I desperately wished I could go back and filter all that I said. But after reading the wonderful write up, I needn't have worried! Sally totally understood my angle on fashion and presented the best looking article I feel has ever been written on Nadinoo thus far. So a whopping big thank you to Sally and Stamford/Rutland Living for the local exposure, it really put a pep in my step!

The fact that it made the cover of Rutland living was the cherry on the cake. I feel truly welcomed into this county, the smallest but best in Britain.

Slow fashion October

My heart nearly stopped when I first laid eyes on this beautiful scene of Katrien taking in the morning sunrise outside her home.. What a beautiful soul and pioneer of slow living, giving us precious glimpses of her idyllic family life in the Italian hills @growingwildthings

An honour to see Katrien enjoying her Nadinoo clothing, wearing our Cross back pinafore stitched in midnight navy linen and draped in our soft check top. Here is her post with thought provoking words in support of the slow fashion movement and a special discount on our Simple wear collection.

growingwildthings"Today started with the most incredible morning mist as the heavy sea of clouds that gather in the valley at night made it's way up towards the october sun... And so I put on my favourite dress, and asked Francesco to snap some pictures of me. Just me. No props. No babies... And as usual I found that quite hard... I'm never really at ease in front of the camera. And so there's a bunch of pictures of me, trying my very best to look glamourous, but in the end it was this one that Francesco took when I thought we were already 'done' that I ended up liking best... • Anyway, I really wanted to come here today because I wanted to tell you about how October is SLOW FASHION month; a month to celebrate all the brave men and women that choose to go against the tidal wave of the fast fashion industry by designing and creating garments in conditions that are safe, sustainable and free of exploitation; men and women that try to make a living for themselves and their families by following their dreams... and that by doing so, often create job opportunities for other people as well... even if it isn't always easy to bring a slow product in an ever faster world... • And as a way to give voice to these amazing initiatives, I have teamed up with my sweet friend Nadia, who is the talented designer behind one of my favourite slow fashion brands @nadinooclothing. Nadia makes all her amazing designs to order to meet your dreams for the perfect dress/overall/shirt to match your wardrobe... so go and have a look at her gorgeous Instagram account! And if there's something there that truly makes your heart sing, you can use the code GROWINGWILDTHINGS to get a 15% discount! (valid until december 2017) • And how about you? What are your favourite slow fashion brands? Let's share the word! Let's share the love!"

Worn by Tina Sosna

One of the great pleasures of designing clothing is seeing them worn by talented ladies across the globe. I never tire of seeing how each woman wears her Nadinoo garment and styles it in a new and inspiring way. Tina Sosna an enchanting illustrator and photographer from Turingia, Germany certainly qualifies for all the above. Not only does she have her own online stationary shop titled Lovely Envelopes with beautifully illustrated notebooks, envelopes, stickers and much more, but she also takes mood evoking photography and stunning short films shared though her Instagram feed and on her blog

I couldn't wait to share this autumnal shoot of her picking fruit and berries in the woods, all of course while wearing her Ecru Goodlife pinafore. Delighted to announce we have this popular style re-socked and ready for you to pop in your basket. A shame we can't offer you a basket as cute as Tina's..

The goodlife dress travels

"Soft indigo folds all tied up with a bow and deep pockets for holding scissors, twigs, seed packets and more. My good life hours are filled with plants, indoors and outside and this dress and apron all sewn up in one – is my kind of comfy. Plus it’s perfect for wearing over my favourite jeans (yes those ones that are worn beyond decency)."

"Each wearer has shared what ‘the good life’ means to them and these pictures pretty much capture my happy place, my good life. At home surrounded by all things living and green – with the husband and cats of course! Grubby hands, thriving pot plants, forlorn succulents, healthy herbs and a few hours slowing down to take care of my green friends. I know I share it often here, but I never knew how much looking after plants would make me happy. I am chomping at the bit waiting for better weather that will let me outside."
"Not just props, as someone suggested, I do actually read my observer books, they come in so handy for reference and to identify native wild flowers, cacti, garden shrubs and ships, (well maybe that one is just a prop). Now I have had to post the dress on to the next person, what will I do without the pockets to carry around all my little books of knowledge and my secateurs while I am gardening? Running our own business has been the ultimate realisation for us living the good life. We work longer hours than ever, but on our own terms. Being my own boss has meant I can work when the daylight has gone and indulge my budding inner gardener at 11 am on a Tuesday morning – (once all our parcels have been sent) if I want to. We all know you have to grab and make the most of all daylight hours while you can, here in the winter."

"The good life dress fitted into my life perfectly, so it was with a dash of reluctance that I took it off, washed, dried, wrapped and posted it on to it’s next adventure. You can follow it from the beginning here with Me and Orla and then on it’s next stop is with Belinda."
