Out and about in Manchester

Today the sun was shining in Manchester, a rare treat for us so we decided to hop on a tram into town. Work has been keeping me pretty busy lately so I felt I deserved a day of fun treats as a nice reward. One of my favourite spots in Manchester is Spinningfield, it always seems to be calm and peaceful even when the rest of Manchester is crazy busy. Most of the buildings are shiny and new but it's nice to find an old building hiding amongst them like this 1950's court house. We stopped for lunch at the Oast House which never fails to lure me in with it's rotisserie chickens served with delicious chips!

Dreaming of the Big Sur

I know it's a while since our California trip but I never quite managed to post any of the hundreds of photos I took. Since the weather is so icky here and not ideal for photography I thought it was the right time to trickle a few highlights from our holiday to remind me of the amazing places we visited. These were taken on the final morning of our trip to the Big Sur, the rugged scenery was breathtaking (especially at dawn).

I don't think it's any secret that I'm a tad smitten with this lady, her blog wishwishwish has given me endless inspiration over the years so it's always exciting to see her in a Nadinoo. Carrie has such a fun approach to styling her daily wears that you can't help but also feel a little bright hat is needed to make you and your outfit smile :)

I'm so happy Carrie got a chance to wear her Bird a day dress over the holidays, an early morning stroll feeding the ducks is just what I had in mind when designing this dress.

I have to confess Pixie was my favourite character in the film.. I think it's because Pixie is so similar to Roz that everything seemed so natural. The Christmas checklist...

I have really enjoyed the festive season this year and quite sad it's already coming to an end. Was such a treat having time off to catch up with friends and family and cook them plenty of yummy food. I thought it would be nice to round it up with a few photo highlights before I dig out the party frock for New Years.

Me and my darling little sister Amira decided to go for a walk around the Quays today not quite realising how windy it was out. Wrapped in my new Tibi Mac I decided to brave it and try take a few photos along the way. I'm so pleased to finally share this little treat of a film with you, feels like a special gift for Christmas. Can't tell you how much fun this film was to put together and have our characters Pixie, Fleur & Lula depicted for the first time. It was a real pleasure to work with Carrie from wishwishwish, an incredibly talented lady bursting with creativity. Together we had so many complimenting ideas on how to bring the AW11 concept to life and I could not be happier with the final result. How adorable is our young model Rosalind? she played each character to perfection, adding her own delicate charm to each roll.

Thank you to the whole team for all your hard work.

Betty and a brew

I was so excited this morning to receive my copy of the first printed issue of Betty. I have been waiting for a magazine to come along that rivals our much loved Frankie and happy to say I feel like Betty is her young British cousin. I don't know why reading a printed copy is so much better than viewing it online but for me it really makes such a difference. It's probably the same reason I can't quite bring myself to buy a kindle this Christmas (sorry if anyone has already), I just love flicking through the pages and getting thoroughly involved with a book or magazine. My increasing love for Betty has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact our Sounds of the Woods collection makes a healthy feature... there really is good deal more to keep my peepers fixed to the Winter issue. With so much going on here it's nice to have a little break and curl up with a magazine and a brew (English for cup of tea). I don't want to give away too much as I'm sure your waiting for your own copy to arrive, but I thought you might like a little peek inside mine..

Out and about in Sunny Blackpool

I remember visiting Blackpool as a child, thinking it was the most exciting place on earth. Sadly like many of England's sea side resorts Blackpool is looking a little tired but it's always nice to revisit a place with so many fun childhood memories. Having grown up in the north of England Blackpool was our Disneyland, it had everything a little Nadinoo could want from a day out..

A real highlight for me and the Mr was seeing the comedy carpet which sits proudly in front of Blackpool tower. If your in the area it's definitely worth a visit!

It was such a wonderful day playing dress up and bringing our AW11 collection to life. I know the blog has been a little quiet lately so I thought I would use this Sunday afternoon to show you a little around Manchester.
Before moving up here I felt a little sad that I would be leaving the many cafes, pubs and vintage markets of London all behind. But once we had settled I decided to do my best to re-discover Manchester and see it with my now grown up eyes (... not those of a penniless student!). I'm so happy I gave it a chance as I've found so many nice areas, events and cafes that I love and enjoy visiting on weekends off.

Hidden away under the railway arches in Castlefield a fantastic farmers market is held on the first Sunday of every month. We were lucky enough to catch the first one and came away with our bags packed full of cheese, home made pies and a variety of vegetables. Already looking forward to the next one which is not far away!

A Fancy Fine Visit

While visiting San Francisco I got to catch up with one of my favorite bloggers Ashley from Fancy Fine. We played Vintage dress up in her cosy apartment while sipping Champagne. Here are a few sneaky photos I took while we were there. She has the most amazing selection of Vintage hats, shoes and frocks that would make any girl jealous.. Not to mention fluffy little donut who was more than happy to pose for the camera!

Ashley was even more of a sweetheart than I could have imagined, taking us to her very favorite Karaoke bar where I was fortunate enough to hear her amazing voice. Some ladies are simply blessed with it all..! We were also joined by Annalise one of the Hummingbird girlies who was just too cute for words. Hoping I get to play out with them both again soon. You can see a few fun pics from the night over on Ashley's blog.

Rainy days...

This week has been raining none stop, but it's set a nice cosy mood in the studio as we are more than happy to stay inside working away on the Autumn Shop update. We have been enjoying listening to 6 music's soothing tunes while sipping tea by the pot load. We originally hoped to be adding a few styles to the shop today, but there is still so much to do... It will hopefully be more like Friday now, but in the mean time I hope you enjoy these shots of our studio taken this week while we prepare Autumn 11.

Styling notes...

I'm always delighted when a collection is unveiled and you pay so much attention to every detail, noticing all the styling items I have carefully selected to go with each look. I love that you always want to know where each piece is from so you can re-create the looks yourself. When I first started styling the shoots I used a lot of my own shoes which were often Vintage or old high street beauties that were serving me well. But it always made me sad when you fell in love with them and I could not point you in the right direction to get your own. So in the latest collections I have tried to find shoes, tights and socks that you available for you to buy right now online or from the high street.

SHOES: I really tried to keep the shoes usage to a minimum this season to give a more uniform look and when stepping in to Office I found the perfect pair of simple Mary Jane's with a chunky 60's heel, you can grab your very own pair in black or brown. I have kept hold of the Brown pair for myself as they are so comfy and work with almost every outfit. I also used some high Brogue lace up's which are photographed above, as you can see they are from Dune and also come in black and brown. Both shoes are currently on offer!

TIGHTS: As the fabrics and prints this season are so rich I wanted to make sure the tights didn't steal any of the lime light, but when I went out to the shops and saw all the amazing autumnal shades and textures I got a tad carried away. I bought so many amazing colours but only used a few in the end to keep things nice and consistent. The wool mustard pair are from Topshop and also come in an over the knee sock that I will be wearing plenty this Winter. The Brown and Grey tights are both from Accessorize and have a lovely texture to them as you can see in the pic above.

It's been so nice to come back and find Manchester in the sunshine, makes the holiday feel like it was not on such a distant land. I can't pretend though that San Francisco was not everything I had hoped it would be and plenty more.. There really is nothing that the city does not have to offer and I'm happy to say we enjoyed it to the full. We even managed after days of wandering and soaking up the sights to meet up with a very fine Ashley Ording for some night time play.. Karaoke, Tiki cocktails, Vintage dress up and plenty of blog chatter where enough to make me want to stay in San Francisco forever..
I took heaps of pics with my new shiny camera of the trip which I'm sure I'll be sharing with you all soon. Just slowly working my way down the to-do list after getting back, although I can feel my body giving way to a nasty cold that's going around. Behind the scenes of AW11 shoot

On Tuesday we shot our AW11 collection at I heart studios in London. With a HUGE sigh of relief it all came together nicely at the very last minute.. Don't want to bore you with the ins and outs of organizing a shoot but I will share a few pics we took during the day. I can't imagine a cuter way to end the Summer season than by re-visiting our very first Nadinoo Muse Rhiannon from Liebe Marlene Vintage for a much needed catch up and to see her skipping through the US countryside in all her favorite Nadinoo's from our Summer collection.

Since our last chat you have been a busy bee and opened up your own online boutique ‘Silent Sundays’, how did this come about?

I sold vintage on Ebay and Etsy for years and loved it, but over time I started to love new clothes by independent designers just as much as vintage, and people around me convinced me to just go for it and open a shop that could sell both. Things didn't really start happening until I got Jamie Hopper on board. She's the best photographer in Atlanta (my words, not hers!) and we worked together a lot on shoots and really had a similar aesthetic, and I knew she'd be perfect to open up an online store with.

I love your concept shoots for Silent Sundays, do you have a mood or theme each season when you buy pieces for the shop?

Thank you! Usually it's just based around the clothes we already picked. We tend to subconsciously pick similar new pieces to sell, though . . . . last season it was a lot of blues and yellows and whites, and this fall we have a lot of darker colors and separates, lots of things in silk . . . It's pretty much just inspired by whatever we want to wear at the moment.

What has inspired you this Summer, either work or play?

Play, for sure. I had kind of a lousy summer, breaking my arm at the beginning of it and getting surgery and being stuck in the house a ton, so I was always wanting to get away somewhere. Vacations are my favorites for choosing outfits for anyway . . . I actually saved up my Nadinoo pieces for the first trip out of town we could take--they were too pretty for everyday Atlanta outings.

Looks like you had so many fun days out taking these photos, can you share a little about where you visited?

My parents live in Tennessee just outside of Nashville, and it's so gorgeous there in the countryside that every time we visit we get tempted to move there. On our first day we went to an old 19th century plantation home called Elm Springs that's always quiet and peaceful whenever we visit it. It's situated on rolling hills and fields, and there's even an old cemetery on site. Then we took some photos in the countryside just a mile or two away from my parents' home in Columbia, Tennessee. My dad and Drew ride their bikes all over the area, so Drew always knows the best farms and fields for photo-taking. On our last day we went to a place in Nashville called the Loveless Cafe, which is an old motel/cafe from the 1950s that lots of country music stars have visited over the years. I ate biscuits and wore the Pixie Counting Planes dress and got to spend some more time with my mom before we had to go back to Atlanta.

What has been the highlight of your Summer or a something you are looking forward to?

The highlight had to be the trips out of town I took. In July Jamie and I went on a big vintage-hunting trip through Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, and I got to see New Orleans for the first time, which was exciting. I loved going to Tennessee since it was the first trip I took once my arm was healed, and it's always great to see my family. Drew and I are getting married in October, so that's what I'm looking forward to the most--getting married in the countryside and then going on a California honeymoon.

You always have such wonderful style, is there anything special on you Winter wish list this year?

Thanks, Nadia! Right now I'm obsessed with tracking down silk blouses and things with '30s/'70s elements to them. I'd also like to find a good light coat since our falls here in Georgia tend to last for a long time and most of my coats are winter and wool . . . And I definitely don't need any new shoes, but a new pair of ankle boots wouldn't hurt.

Can we expect any new projects from Liebe Marlene Vintage or Silent Sundays in the next year?

Right now we're getting ready to shoot our fall/winter lookbook, so we've been scouting locations and trying to track down models for that. We'd also like to start working with new designers once our store gets a bit more off the ground. It would be a dream to stock Nadinoo!

A welcome visit

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to get a special visit from two of my faiv ladies; Genevieve of Rose a Petits Pois and Ale of Rosaspina Vintage. It was so nice to meet them both in person and get to know them a little more after the many emails which have been exchanged over the months. We had a whole day to chat, drink tea and see them try on every Nadinoo garment in the room. It really made me wish we had our own boutique as I rarely get to see girls try on our creations and see how they respond to the fabrics and silhouettes up close.

I used it as a chance to show them the new AW11 collection and see how they liked the new designs and fits we have been working away on. Ale was ready with her camera to snap away sneaky pics for her blog, here are just a few which I picked out. I hope you enjoy the little teaser from our new collection and a further glimpse into our studio. Nadinoo Summer Muse- The singer

With the wonderful reaction to our Nadinoo Muse features we though it would be lovely to re-visit our inspiring ladies and give you a Summer time edition.

Becky Filip the stunning lead singer of The Honey Trees was so kind to oblige, picking her favorite pieces from the Summer collection and answering a few questions too. With her talented brother Simon Filip once again behind the lens they worked their magic and put together this breath taking shoot for us.

Where did you shoot these beautiful Summer photographs?

These photos were shot in both the Central Coast of California, and Northern California. The Lula's untie me dress was shot in front of a place called Windmill Farms, where the flowers surrounding the outside were beautifully blooming! We shot the Fleur's untie me tee and Summer breeze skirt near some farms and orchards in Nipomo, CA. (wish the horses around the area would have cooperated with us that day!) And Lula's Darling dress was shot at a ranch in Sacramento, CA.

You seem to have such a harmonized taste with you brother Simon, do you enjoy working together?

Simon and I have a very similar aesthetic when it comes to photography, so it's very easy working with him and knowing that whatever the outcome is we'll both like it! We definitely enjoy working together because it's easy, and obviously we're comfortable with each other. Plus neither of us are afraid to tell the other one off if we need to. ;)

Each location looks perfect for the outfit, did you plan the day to suit?

We actually didn't plan too much when it came to the photos, as far as which outfit would be shot where. It just seemed to work out! We knew that we wanted to take photos on a dock somewhere, and it just so happened that Lula's Darling dress was the last to shoot, and the dock was the last place we found. So, it all just seemed to work out nicely.

What has inspired you this Summer, either work or play?

I'm constantly inspired by a beautiful sunny day, which here in California, you get a lot of in the Summer! It gets me in a great mood to work on new creations every day.

Do you have any new fun projects on the go that you would like to share?

I'm currently working on some new prints and other items for my etsy shop The Meadow Lark which I'm excited about sharing soon! :) I've recently taken up painting with acrylics and I've been really happy with the outcome of my experimenting with it!

What has been the highlight of your Summer or the perfect Summer's day so far?

The Summer so far has been sort of a blur, with just working on paintings and music lately. I'm currently in Northern California spending time with family, so that has been nice. But I look forward to getting back down south soon and spending some days at the beach!

Can we expect any new projects from the Honey Trees? Do you have any tour dates planned?

No tour dates as of right now, but we are currently just focusing on getting songs done for a full length album. We hope to get into the studio soon! Also looking into booking some shows in the LA area soon. :)

I feel a little spoilt this week with yet another adorable shoot to share featuring our Nadinoo wears. This time it's the beautiful engagement shoot of Shelli + Chris shot by their dear friend Scott Chester in a stunning railroad museum.

One of the great perks of my jobs is getting to know lovely ladies like Shelli who has been a dear Nadinoo customer for some time. I have enjoyed so many emails chin wagging with her so it was a treat to help choose which Nadinoo frocks she could wear on the shoot.
The happy couple were also kind enough to answer a few nosey questions I had on how they met and why they are so smitten with each other. I hope they help bring these images to life and give you a glimpse into their world.

From our emails I already feel like I know you but could you introduce yourself and Chris and tell us a little about what you do?
Well I am a freelance photographer and photo editor and Chris is a software engineer. It sounds like night and day I know, but we actually have a lot in common. It is also good to have the balance.

You look like you both have such a sweet friendship, how did you both meet?

We met and were friends long long before we dated. We used to live in the same boring town as teenagers – we were both little hellraisers in our own way. I am a couple years older than Chris so I remember driving him around before he had a license. I was the indie music snob and he was this shy little skater whose mom had a fridge magnet that said “cats rule the world.” I remember that magnet so well. I escaped to upstate New York as soon as I could get away, then moved to Scotland for several years. So we fell out of touch as friends you could say.

We met up again years later at a friends house when I was visiting and hatched a plan to go to the wedding of another old friend in St Petersburg, Florida, which involved a 16 hour road trip. It was really the beginning of everything, that road trip. We stopped to take photos, hit up roadside stands, goofed off, saw the mermaids in Weeki Wachee and sort of fell in love along the way. It was also the beginning of a really hokey souvenir collection.

From all the laughter in the photos I can see you both have a great sense of humor, what makes you both laugh?

Films, books, and I guess the ridiculousness of life and people. I have always been a little on the sarcastic side and Chris could say the same. I think we both were moved around so much as kids, having a sense of humor was a coping strategy no doubt it is for sure a trait we share.

How did you decide you wanted to spend the rest of your lives together, was there a proposal?

I think I knew by the time we got home from Florida after that first trip. We were together a few years before the proposal - we took a 10 day trip to Paris for Christmas. After a lovely dinner, Chris really wanted to go put our padlock on the Pont des Arts bridge even though the weather was really dreadful and it was late. So we navigated through the freezing rain in the dark over to the bridge. I put the lock on, snapped a couple photos and there in the freezing rain, Chris proposed to me at midnight on Christmas Eve. I was not expecting it to say the least! That night we went straight over to the Latin Quarter and celebrated in a happy corny little Greek restaurant. Best Christmas ever.

I loved the location! It looked like a photographers play ground, can you tell us a little about it and if there was any story in mind?

A very quiet railroad museum only about 20 minutes from where we live, I owe the photographer, Scott, for finding it. Once he mentioned it we were so sold on the idea. So much of our life together is about travel. We are travelling fools and our wedding required quite a bit of travel on everyone’s parts (trains, planes, automobiles, oh and boats) so it seemed entirely appropriate.

As a photographer, how was it being on the other side of the lens?

Terrible! So awkward and embarrassing! Actually it wasn’t too bad because the photographer is a friend of ours, and we had a good time goofing around. I am still shocked he drove his lovingly restored vintage Thunderbird into a field for us, I was holding my breath when he jumped the curb, thinking “please don’t hurt the car”.

Did you have a favorite part of the shoot or photo that you feel especially proud of?

I think I loved the mailroom car quite a bit, I wish I could pack it up and take it home, make it a playhouse or something. There were hooks hanging from the top on rails I just wanted to hop on them and fly down the car, but I fear they may have been just a tad unstable.

Finally a huge congratulations on getting married this Summer, can you give us a little glimpse into what your wedding was like?

The wedding was in Positano and I really love that place so much, it killed me to leave. The whole thing was was amazing, and in true Chris and Shelli fashion, not exactly what was planned!

Our Pixie Goes Sailing dresses have been doing so well, we are already making a second batch for you all. Here is a little nosey at them in progress... The collars are definitely the fun part, with each row of taping neatly pinned ready to be stitched to perfection. I love how the studio looks when a batch is being made, always seems like things are in order!

I have been eagerly awaiting these photos since the lovely Anja from Clever nettle told me her ideas for this Country side shoot. Having fallen in love with her La Danse shoot a while back I knew she would capture our clothing in a magical light and bring them to life in her delicately dreamy way!

The idea came when she found this empty old house on Sauvi Island deciding it would make the perfect location for a Summer time shoot. She then picked a few pieces from her favorite independent designers (yey us!) to dress the cutie models and rounded a team of talented ladies to help complete her vision.

I think they did a fine job, our Lula's untie me dress is certainly enjoying being in the spot light. There are two photos which I absolutely adore, but I would love to hear which do you like?

Mini adventures-Manchester ship canal

In an effort to explore our surroundings me and James took a boat tour of the Manchester ship canal which sailed from outside our apartment to the Liverpool docks. The day started out cold, wet and incredibly windy, not the most encouraging weather for a day out but slowly it began to brighten up making the views more appealing as we approached Liverpool.

The huge industrial swinging bridges were rather impressive too but I'm happy I took my book along for when things got a little repetative. Anywho I did take my camera to keep myself amused and document the day. Most were blurry even though we were traveling at a snails pace but still managed a few beauts which give you a feel for the day.

I had never been through a lock before so it was kind of exciting navigating through each one watching the water drain away from beneath us before progressing to the next part. There were so many old lock keepers cottages and decaying buildings that looked like they had seen better days but fun to imagine how they would have been back in the day.

Visits to San Francisco

I'm so pleased me and the Mr have booked a trip to San Francisco in September, we are hoping to combine two joyous events; our first wedding anniversary and my 27th Birthday. I can't tell you how long I have been longing for visits to this adorable city! I have collected so many links and must see areas, but I would really love to hear any personal recommendations you may have for places to stay, eat, visit and play around the city and beyond. We really want to make the most of this holiday as it is our first America trip together and I would love for us to find a place we feel totally at home. I have a good feeling this may be our happy place!

Saying bye to Demo

Last week was our first week without Demo and it was quite easy to see how much she contributed to our little team as we were slow and totally unbalanced! I did have a bit of an accident while moving the machines in a an effort to spring clean and sliced my finger open which slowed things down even more but having to negotiate Demo's work load was a bit of a shock. Thankfully my finger is healing nicely and I am also happy to tell you we have found ourselves a shiny new intern by the name of Raquel! She will be joining us in a few weeks time from Portugal. We look forward to welcoming her into our team and getting her up to speed!
Demo popped in this morning to say bye before flying home to visit family in China and told me she had posted about her experience at Nadinoo on her blog. I thought it was such a sweet write up of her time here, you might like a read if you are thinking of interning with us at a later date. She also posted a few pics of her cute self playing in her Spinning tea cup dress. A style which Demo named for us and frequently chatted to while working away... cooing a little something like; "you are soo cuuuuute! tooo cuuute! OooOoo how cuuute!.." Indeed her little crazy ways will be missed in the studio.

"My internship with Nadinoo came to an end last Friday. I spent such a lovely time with our little team in the cozy studio. I still remember the first time I saw the Nadinoo website and the images of Nadinoo collections, I opened my eyes so wide and said out loud to my boyfriend that they are so pretty! My heart was filled with excitement and I so much wanted to be part of it. I was so passionate to apply my internship with Nadinoo. I have learnt so much in the past few months. I learnt the proper way of cutting fabrics. I can't tell you enough how small a thing cutting fabrics seems but how big the knowledge behind the job it actually is. There are so many things you have to be aware while cutting, for example, to line up the prints, to make sure the fabrics do not have marks, to know which pattern piece refers to the actual garment, to draw the patterns accurately and follow the grain line, and at the same time to save fabrics and time as much as possible, etc. There are loads other little things I have learnt, such as making beautiful self-fabric buttons. Anyways, I know how much this internship will affect my future study. It has already made me into a more confident person. It was really an amazing time and experience in Nadinoo. I sure will miss the cutest designer Nadia Izruna. I loved how she suddenly starting singing and dancing in the studio, and laughing out loud to the silly jokes in the radio. She is the first designer I have ever worked with, I am really grateful for the opportunity she gave me and the time she spent teaching me."

"She gave me a surprise on my last day when we went out for an afternoon tea after work, a SPINNING TEACUP DRESS! I was so happy and I almost cried. This dress is special for me, I love the name so much, and I always looked at it in the studio and couldn't stop making the "awww" noise. It is such an beautiful dress. I loved the print so much, the colour and the silhouette, what I love the most are the pockets and the scalloped double collar. Cute! Cute! Cute! Yes, so demdem cute!"

Sweet collaboration- Genevieve Godbout

I can’t tell you how happy I am to introduce this wonderful collaboration with the talents of Genevieve Godbout an illustrator based in London. This delightful project came about when Genevieve emailed me an illustration of a darling character named Adele she drew wearing our Fleur’s Penna dress who was to feature in her upcoming children’s book. I instantly fell in love with this dear character and wanted to see her in more Nadinoo creations! I don’t think anything could have prepared me for the cuteness that followed and a sweet friendship that sparked from this collaboration.

Genevieve is such a charming lady I though it best that she tells you her tale and more about how she creates these delightful pieces of art!

Hello there Genevieve, can you tell us a little about your background?

Hello Nadia ! I’m French Canadian, I grew up in a small town near Quebec city. I left home quite early to study traditional animation in Montreal for 3 years and then moved to Paris for a 3^rd year diploma, still in traditional animation, at Gobelins l’ecole de l’image.

I’m now an illustrator based in London, currently working for the Walt Disney Company under Fashion & Home Consumer Products. I’ve been living here for 5 years and I must say that London has become a second home for me.

What inspired you to become an illustrator?

I know it’s so typical, but I’ve always loved to draw ! At a very early age I already enjoyed drawing characters, designing their outfits and surroundings.

As a professional, I guessed what influenced my style the most is my background in traditional animation and my love for animated movies such as the Disney classics and Miyazaki’s masterpieces.

Growing up which kind of stories did you enjoy the most?

I was completely bewitched by the tale of the little mermaid who ends her life as sea foam for the sake of her true love (who loves another one). It really broke my heart.

Other than that I enjoyed most stories that capture a child’s imagination. I could believe anything as if it was the absolute truth. I was such a naïve child and still am sometimes !

Can you tell us a little about your thought process and how an artwork is developed?

I always try to get as much visual references as possible and then start by sketching on paper. I do tiny thumbnails for the general composition and very rough drawings to get the essence of the characters in their environment. The hardest part is to translate everything into colour pencils without losing its initial energy. That’s why I usually keep my rough drawings very rough so I have more freedom and fun with the finals, as if they were completely new drawings !

Very often I’ll end up doing a few colour versions … It has to feel right and look good enough. With time I learnt not to be afraid to start again from scratch if the result was not up to my expectations.

These are a few sketches that Genevieve worked on before creating three darling wooden panels for our studio of Pixie, Fleur and Lula in our AW10 collection. Can you spot who is who?

What materials do you enjoy working with the most? Is there anything you would love to try?

I really love using color pencils, more precisely Faber-Castell polychromos. They’re the best !

In addition to do illustration for books, I’d love to try creating patterns for fabric & clothing… A bit like the ones you use for your lovely creations ;-)

Describe your perfect day off and who would you take with you?

Hum… that’s a hard question !! Is there such thing as a perfect day ? If so I guess I’d be wearing a Nadinoo dress !

On the morning our cat will have been kind enough not to wake me up. And as if by magic the whole flat would be clean and sparkly !! The birds would be signing and the sun shinning inside. I would have a lazy morning in bed reading my favourite book, would get lunch with my friends and sister, have a cosy afternoon with my family and a romantic dinner with my loved one. Of course, all of this on the same day is absolutely impossible !!

Can you tell us about any new exciting characters or projects you are working on at the moment?

Rose a petits pois is a project I’ve been working on for a while with a friend of mine, the main character being our dear beloved Adele. We hope to be in touch with publishing companies soon to see what comes out of it.

In the meantime, I’m also working on another book called Joseph Fipps with La Pasteque, a publishing company based in Montreal. And Joseph is another really sweet character to work with ! (even though he can’t wear Nadinoo ! ;-)

Why did you think Nadinoo was the right fit for Adele?

Adele is a very pretty, delicate and feminine character doted with a strong personality. Just like Lula, Pixie and Fleur from Nadinoo, she’s seductive, playful and a bit of a day dreamer !

What would Adele enjoy wearing from our SS11 collection and where would she wear them?

I really feel like this collection it was made for her ! She loves everything that puts the emphasis on her very tiny waist so her favorite is Lula’s darling dress. She’s probably going to wear Fleur’s summer breeze skirt too with a very fitted top. And because Adele is living on the coast and enjoys some lazy afternoon under the sun, she can’t wait to put on Pixie goes sailing dress in blue !

Personally since I know Brian Wildsmith, one of my favorite illustrator, is behind the Tom’s Jet print from your Pixie’s counting plane style I’m dreaming to get either the shirt or the dress !

And finally do you have any advice for any aspiring illustrators reading?

Illustration requires a lot of work and like any art it brings a lot of self-questioning and doubts. That’s why it is so important to enjoy every step of it !

Being inspired and keeping the inspiration flowing is also primordial. Trying, failing, questioning and discovering are part of the creation process… Do not be afraid of it ! And never ever undermine the power of a comfortable studio space ! It may sound superfluous but I find it so important. It puts myself in the right mood and it’s the only place where I can really concentrate.

You will gain hands on experience and a great insight into the inner workings of an emerging clothing label.

It's always sad to say bye to our lovely interns after sharing so much with them, I still miss Alva and Caitlin dearly.

Above is one of Demo's daily jobs cutting and preparing each garment ready to be sewn.
There is so much to learn from this process as you understand how a garment is put together from the earliest stage..

This our super skilled seamstress Alison who joined us early this year, her work is divine and there is no one I trust more with a needle and thread!

There is so much work that goes into each Nadinoo garment, never leaving us with nothing to do.

So happy we have handmade the first batch of Pixie Goes Sailing dresses in time for the sun to pop back out from behind the clouds! I used it as a excuse to try mine on and soak up some rays at lunch time in a cosy little spot outside the studio.
I forgot just how nicely this dress fits with it's synched waist that makes me feel so delicate and precious. Fingers crossed we get more sun so I can take it on a day out by the Sea...

Hope you all had a lovely restful weekend! Here in Manchester it has been none stop wind, rain and gloomy greyness, but I used it as an opportunity to stay in my PJ's and catch up on much needed Gossip Girl and Grey's anatomy. Also finally got round to watching Blue Valentine which strangely put me a positive mood.. Anywho after plenty of rest, wine and wii karaoke I'm fresh and ready for the new week ahead!

Me enjoying the latest Frankie

I don't think it's any secret that I adore Frankie Magazine and eagerly await every issue to arrive! This issue of course was no different, I have been savoring every article trying desperately to make it last.. But for some reason this one seems to have captured everything I'm currently in love with and I have already blitzed it from cover to cover!

The Wedding special got me all emotional and made me want to get married all over again with so many inspiring photographs of quirky love birds on their big day. It's so nice to read about how they prepared and what cute things they chose to incorporate and old traditions they decided to leave out. Me and James had a very similar approach to our day which made it so fun to plan as there were no rules!

Me and huby managed to escape to a quiet village in the south of France for a couple of days over Easter break. It was the perfect setting to relax and unwind soaking up some much needed sun. The online boutique will be open as usual but all queries and orders will be dealt with when we return on the 2nd of May. Spring Summer 11 is finally here!

I have to first apologize for how long this season has taken me to finish, you have been so amazing with your orders that I had very little time left in the day to design and sample new ideas. Still with the help of my lovely new Nadinoo team it was finally possible. We are really pleased with how it turned out and hope you like all the new additions.
I would like to share with you the mood images we shot in the park after we had finished all the looks in the studio. It was the first sunny day of the spring season so it didn't seem right to be cooped up inside while the sun was shining away outside!

Nadinoo Muse- The singer

I remember hearing music by The Honey Trees for the first time early last year and falling instantly in love with their charming and whimsical sound. After purchasing their Album and doing a little research I discovered they are Becky Filip and Jacob Wick a cutesome twosome from California who are bound by their love and passion for music and each other.
As if the excitement of listening to their music wasn't enough I found these beautiful shoots photographed by Simon Filip(Becky's brother) where they both look as though they have hopped out of a magical enchanted land where sunset tea parties and singing under the stars are all part of daily life...

I can't tell you how excited I am to introduce to you our latest Nadinoo Muse Becky Filip, who inspired me plentiful when designing the Winter collection through her angelic voice and English rose charm. Every piece in turned out would have looked perfect on this flowing red haired beauty but we finally settled on Pixie's Adventure cape, Pixie's Plume mini and Fleur's Penna dress in the green. When trying to figure out which Nadinoo character would suit her the most I quickly realized she has a little of them all, dreamy like Fleur, adventurous like little Pixie and as wonderfully charming as Lula in everything she does!

It was such a pleasure getting to know her over the past few months and I hope you all enjoy this glimpse into her magical world through the photo's, interview and music...

How would you describe The Honey Trees music?

I would describe our music as dreamy, magical music. We try to create an experience and stir hope in people with each song, and we hope that people feel that while listening.

When did your love for singing come about?

I suppose it sounds a bit cliche, but I've always had a love for singing! My family is very musical so I've been surrounded by music and singing my entire life. One of my earliest memories is when I was three, walking around the house, singing constantly. I also remember returning back to the states from visiting family in England when I was 12, and all of a sudden being able to harmonize with every song I heard... and I think that's when I started writing my own songs and becoming more serious with singing.

Who have been your favorite musical influences?

There have been so many! I grew up listening to a lot of Queen, Phil Collins, Sting, and Annie Lennox, courtesy of my parents. Most people think it's funny that I love Freddie Mercury so much, but it's true! I wish I could have had the chance to hear him sing live. But I also love Paul McCartney, who will forever be my favorite Beatle, and Bjork. Her voice amazes me and it's incredible what she can do with it.

I love that you are also a talented illustrator as well as a musician, do you have any other hidden talents or secret hobbies?

Why thank you! Hmm... secret hobbies... I've recently started learning how to sew! I suppose that's become a bit of a hobby, although I definitely need to practice more. I also pride myself in doing 'the charleston' pretty well. ;)

What’s on your wish list this year?

I've been trying to add a lot more authentic vintage pieces to my wardrobe lately, so I would love to collect some more dresses from the 40's, 50's, and 60's. But besides that, I think I'm pretty content with what I've been blessed with. :)

What is the best thing about being in The Honey Trees?

Writing and playing music with my best friend is definitely the best thing. I think there's something really special about doing something you love with the person you love.

You are always so beautifully styled do you have any inspiring style icons?

Thank you! I don't really have any specific style icons... I'm inspired by a lot of different people, whether it be real life, or characters in films. Mostly people who have an effortless way of melding vintage with modern pieces, and who just wear what they love no matter what others think.

What is your favourite item of clothing in your wardrobe that always makes you smile?

Well, since receiving these beautiful Nadinoo pieces, they've definitely (and I'm sure will continue to..) make me smile! But also, my mum recently knit me a cardigan from a vintage pattern that fits me perfectly and goes well with so many things. Plus I love having something special that I can hopefully one day pass down if I have a daughter. :)

If you could go back in time and live for a decade, what era would you choose? (any style music or film references... )

Oh, this is definitely a hard one! It's hard because I love fashion and music equally from the 20's to the 70's... but I love the decade we live in now because we can have things from all of those decades collectively! But if I had to choose, I think right now I would say the 40's. I love the romance of the fashion and the music, but I think I could probably do without the war!

What did you want to be when you were all grown up?

When I was younger I wanted to be a great many things! Besides a singer and artist, I think my list also included actress, author, and olympic gymnast. I think at one point in my early life, I really wanted to just be Judy Garland. I suppose I've always set my hopes high. :)

Your most special place to go on a day or afternoon off and what you would do when you get there?

If this were a dream place, it would be the English countryside, and I would spend a day under the trees and running through meadows. But in real life, I love going to a downtown area (of whatever city I happen to be in) and antiquing, going to coffee shops, and picnicking in a park.

Finally, as our latest Muse what inspiration or ideas do you have for Nadinoo?

Wearing your clothes, I feel like I'm in a real-life fairy tale... so I think you should just continue being as magical as you are. :)

Every now and again we come across a customer who opens our eyes to a wonderful talent, too special not to be acknowledged and shared with you all. Well this new feature is intended to do just that! A perfect reason to show off the talents of our customers while getting them to tell us a little about their work.

Today we have Melbourne based illustrator Anna Walker inviting us into her enchanted world of fairy tales and delightful creatures. I’m such a fan of her magical woodland trees, how I wish they were real! How very fitting that she purchased our Pixie’s fairy tale dress which inspired one of her latest paintings.

Hello there Anna, can you tell us a little about what you do?

A little about me . . .I paint pictures for children’s books, write stories, tap dance and knit small woolly animals.

What inspired you to become an illustrator?

I have always loved picture books and the enchanted world of fairies, trolls and dancing squirrels. I remember when I was a child sitting on a bed looking at a fairy tale thinking, this is what I am going to do when I grow up. My mum was a librarian and my dad a goldsmith, so my love of books and detail was encouraged from an early age.

What or where is your ideal creative space?

My studio is my favourite place to draw. When I am in my studio I feel like a bowerbird surrounded by my collection of special things. I have tiny wooden animals, knitted flowers, Japanese postcards and lots of other bits and pieces on my desk.

Do you have a favourite piece in your portfolio? And if so please tell us why it is so special to you?

The paintings I have created for my children’s books are the pieces that I hold closest to my heart. One of my favourite pieces is a painting I created for ‘The Miggy Tree’ by Karl Yeomans, which was a very special book. There is something about the flight of a bird, which is uplifting, and the story this image belongs to while being sad is also very inspiring.

Do your children or pets inspire or pop up in your paintings at all?

This question made me smile, as this morning I found a budgie feather in my paint palette from Madame Fifi! But apart from feathery paint being used in my paintings, my children, our bouncy black dog ‘Sunshine’ and three chickens have all featured in my paintings. Even our naughty ‘Flopsy’ rabbit made it into the Woodland tree painting inspired by the delightful Pixie Fairy tale dress.

Can you tell us a little about your thought process and how a painting is developed?

For me creating a painting a little like sewing. I collect bits of images, ribbons of thoughts, scraps of things people have said and bring them together in an idea for a painting. I start with drawing a rough on a piece of paper in pencil. When I am happy with the image I enlarge the drawing to, sometimes tweaking parts of the drawing to capture the essence of the original idea. I then translate the drawing into ink or paint.

Growing up which kind of stories did you enjoy the most?

Books with ducks in bonnets, children exploring woods and talking frogs all captured my imagination. I loved stories such as ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ by Margery Williams. Books were a way of stepping into another world that I still love to visit.

What materials do you enjoy working with the most? Is there anything you would love to try?

I enjoy playing with ink and collage at the moment, but I have always loved printmaking. I am saving up for a set of Japanese carving tools to experiment with woodblock printing and hopefully one day I will be able to use this lovely technique in a book.

Can you tell us about any new exciting characters or projects you are working on at the moment?

I am working on a book about one of my pets and she travels on an exciting adventure! The story has been established, and I am developing drawings for the character, learning how she will move, studying her expression and personality.

Do you have any advice for any aspiring illustrators reading?

It is a wonderful time to be a new illustrator because craft and hand made things are so popular.

Visit exhibitions, exhibit your work, share a studio, travel, keep your eyes open to new ideas, work hard, be kind to yourself, be brave and have fun!

It's been wet and grey here in Manchester this week which has made designing the new Summer collection a little difficult. Thinking about turning up the heat and pretending Summer is just round the corner.

A belated Happy New Year!

I have been meaning to send out well wishes for the New Year but as always I've been busy working away at the machines. Hope you all enjoyed a great New Years Eve and have made some winning new years resolutions. I have to say I'm really pleased with how I've already put a few into action, the first being to finally re-ignite my love for photography. This pic above was taken by your's truly in our Manchester apartment, I'm still in love with our enchanted tree and refuse to take it down until he begins to look a little sad. I was lucky enough to be handed down this darling vintage camera and have been snapping away like crazy ever since to discover all that it can do. It is certainly a work in progress but I hope this year to share with you more of what takes place behind the scenes of Nadinoo, so you can see all the work and love that goes into each and every garment.

Other new years resolutions have resulted in a Rock it belly dancing class, swimming lessons and less chips from Linda's cafe. Would love to hear what you have in store for 2011!

Nadinoo's Muse -The Vintage stylist/seller

When the idea of featuring a series of real life Nadinoo muses came about Rhiannon from Liebe Marlene Vintage was my natural first choice.

This enchanting girl is the perfect Nadinoo Lula character I design for with long wavy brown hair and delicate doll like features, I can picture her in the entire AW10 collection.

On approaching this talented lady I had the perfect dress in mind and was utterly thrilled she picked the very same one "Lula's Fairy tale dress". It's a dream to see her in one of my very own dresses styled in a magical leafy wood.

In case you have not yet been introduced to this little lady I highly recommend her blog Liebe Marlene Vintage where you will never be short of inspiration. Featuring interviews with independent designers and sellers from around the world. Not to forget the wonderfully styled vintage outfits worn by herself and other little cuties, never failing to make my heart melt and go straight to her Etsy shop for more...

When did your love for vintage come about?

Honestly it was kind of accidental. I think that the first fashion-y things I fell in love with were old Audrey Hepburn movies and the descriptions of dresses in F. Scott Fitzgerald novels, but I didn't really put two and two together, and when I first started getting into clothes and buying clothes I gravitated towards vintage just because it was affordable. I went to college in small town Indiana where it was pretty easy to find vintage so I took it for granted until I was 25 or so, living in Minneapolis, and suddenly pretty obsessed with tracking down clothes from specific eras.

Do you have a collection of pieces that are just too good to say bye to?

I'm probably more prone to hold onto something old and not too valuable just because it has sentimental value. I do sell a lot of things I vowed I'd never sell when I bought them . . .my tastes just change, or my bank account goes too low and I throw things in the shop. That said I have a few things . . . There's this little beaded blouse from the '40s that I can't see myself selling, though that might be because I bought it on a family vacation in Pigeon Forge and I have such great memories from it.

Are you reading anything at the moment?

Yes! It's strange, but last week I was sick in bed for four days straight and didn't read a thing. Then as soon as I got better I went to the library and picked up Eudora Welty's The Ponder Heart, and I love it. Eudora Welty is hit or miss with me. I love her writing style, but I only really like her books and stories when they're funny and written in the first person. This book reminds me of her story "Why I Live at the P.O.," so it's a hit.

What is your favourite thing in your wardrobe that makes you smile?

A few things! I have a dress from Lover that I managed to buy on sale a few years back, and I always love to wear it. I know this Nadinoo dress will be a favorite of mine--the little woodland animals on it definitely make me smile. And also I don't know if it counts since I can't wear it anymore, but my mom just gave me a sweater my great-grandma knit for me when I was a baby--it's blue and has bunnies on it and has a matching bonnet, and it's adorable.

Your most special place to go on a day or afternoon off?

I don't know if there's any place in particular, but I love going on day trips with my fiance, Drew. I really like getting out of the city and into the country and seeing a completely different part of the south, where it's quiet and the buildings and streets and roads are preserved enough to give you an idea of what the area used to be like back in the day.

What’s on your x-mas wish list this year?

I always feel rotten asking for things. My real Christmas list is really practical and non fashion-related (clothes for winter running, a subscription to this really good local history magazine called Georgia Backroads). But here's a list of things I'd buy right now if someone gave me some money and forced me to spend it (impractically):

-TBA blue velvet dress.

-Wendy Brandes Little Woolf Necklace.

-Aldo Black Velvet Platforms (for New Year's).

-And chocolate.

When styling your shoots do you have any particular girl or story in mind, real or fictional?

I've only styled a few shoots so I'm still learning and don't have much of a method yet, but basically I just ask the photographer (my friend Jamie Hopper) what her thoughts and plans are, and then I come up with outfits. So far it's a lot like planning out an outfit post for my blog, and the clothes I pick for the shoots are usually stuff I'd wear myself. I wish I could say I dreamed up whole stories around the outfits, but I don't.

If you could go back in time and live for a decade, what era would you choose?

The 1930s for sure. Right now I'm more interested in late 1910s, early 1920s fashion, but I just love '30s films and the toughness of the decade. I like the way people talk in The Thin Man films and It Happened One Night, and I like the escapism of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and it all just makes sense to me so I think I'd fit inside that decade best.

What did you want to be when you were all grown up?

When I was a kid I always thought I'd grow up and live far away in the woods in a little cabin and start writing books. I'd have three dogs and talk to people only once in a while and be a complete hermit.

Finally, what inspiration or ideas do you have for Nadinoo? What would you like to see from us in the future?

Oh, I love what you do, so I'd say just keep what you're doing! I can't wait to see how Nadinoo evolves. I'm already excited to see what you have in store for spring.

N.E.E.T. The book!!

I have been anticipating the release of this fine book since being contacted by Stephanie from N.E.E.T. to be one of the 5 shops featured. I have been a huge fan of this Indie magazine since setting up Nadinoo, it has introduced me to so many new designers, illustrators and photographers over the years.

It's a HUGE pleasure to be part of their first ever book!

I'm so impressed with how it looks, if those covers alone are not enough to tempt you the layouts look even more exciting.. I'm normally pretty decisive but changed my mind on which cover to order quite a few times. Finally went back to my first choice of cover number 5.

Can't wait for it to arrive on my door step!
